Compare the2025 Chevrolet Equinox EVVS 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5

The Chevrolet Equinox EV has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Ioniq 5 doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV offers an optional HD Surround Vision and it also offers an optional rear camera washer to make backing always safe, regardless of road dirt or grime, while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 doesn’t offer a camera washer, requiring manual cleaning.

Both the Equinox EV and the Ioniq 5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are better in initial quality than Hyundai vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet second in initial quality, above the industry average. With 2 more problems per 100 vehicles, Hyundai is ranked third.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Chevrolet vehicles are more reliable than Hyundai vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Chevrolet fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 24 more problems per 100 vehicles, Hyundai is ranked 13th.

The Equinox EV’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs standard on the Ioniq 5 are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the Equinox EV has larger standard tires than the Ioniq 5 (245/55R19 vs. 235/55R19).

The Equinox EV’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Ioniq 5 XRT’s standard 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Equinox EV has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Ioniq 5 XRT.

The Chevrolet Equinox EV’s wheels have 6 lugs for longer wheel bearing life, less chance of rotor warping and greater strength. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 only has 5 wheel lugs per wheel.

For better maneuverability, the Equinox EV’s turning circle is 1.3 feet tighter than the Ioniq 5’s (38.1 feet vs. 39.4 feet). The Equinox EV’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the Ioniq 5 N’s (38.1 feet vs. 40.7 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Equinox EV has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Ioniq 5 N (6.4 vs. 5.6 inches), allowing the Equinox EV to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Equinox EV’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Ioniq 5’s (1500 vs. 0 pounds).

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Equinox EV uses the StabiliTrak® sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Ioniq 5 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The Equinox EV’s front and rear power windows all lower with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Ioniq 5’s standard power windows’ passenger windows don’t open automatically.

If the windows are left open on the Equinox EV the driver can close them all from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Ioniq 5 can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Equinox EV’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Ioniq 5’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

The Chevrolet Equinox outsold the Hyundai Ioniq 5 by over five to one during 2024.
